Free worldbuilding template

A world is not more real for having an exchange rate. It is more real for having one detail the reader can smell, and one rule with a price attached.

What’s included

Start from one difference and follow it

Pick the single thing that is true here and not at home, then ask what it does to money, law, travel, religion and family. A world built outward from one difference holds together. A world built as a list of categories to fill in reads like a form, because it was one.

Give every rule a cost

Magic, technology or power without a price produces a world with no story pressure in it. The rules card asks four questions in order: what is possible, what it costs, who is allowed to do it, and what happens when the rule is broken. The fourth question is usually where the plot is.

Only build what the story walks through

Worldbuilding is an extremely comfortable way to avoid writing. The open questions card exists so you can leave something undecided instead of inventing an answer you will contradict later. If a detail will never appear on the page, it does not need to exist yet.

Worked example

A writer has forty pages of notes and no scenes. Moved onto the map, thirty of those pages turn out to describe geography no character ever visits. The two factions with a live disagreement fill half a card. That half card is the book.

Write the one difference between this world and ours.

  2. Sort

Frequently asked questions

What should a worldbuilding template include?

The rules of the world and their cost, the factions and what they want, the places that carry tension, the history that still causes trouble, and the texture of ordinary life. Anything the story does not touch can wait.

How much worldbuilding is too much?

When the notes are growing and the scenes are not. Detail that never reaches the page is a hobby rather than preparation, which is why this template keeps an explicit open questions card instead of demanding an answer for everything.

Is this suitable for tabletop games as well as novels?

Yes, though a game usually needs more of the world to be usable at short notice. The tabletop campaign planner adds factions in motion, NPCs and session preparation on top of this.
